Meet Ben - Writing Success with Assistive Technology
Ben, now a 5th grade student at the Chamberlin School in South Burlington, learned to use Dragon Naturally Speaking in the 4th grade to help him with his writing. Now that Ben has learned to dictate his writing pieces, he will continue with other assistive technologies to improve upon his organization and editing.

The South Burlington School District Assistive Technology Program is in its second year of development. By definition, AT is any service or device used to enable students to perform tasks they may have previously found difficult or unable to accomplish. It promotes student independence and empowers teachers to provide alternative solutions for struggling students in the classroom. Our program offers consultation on the selection and use of both low and high technology AT solutions. Our goal is to build capacity at the school level and provide guidance and support to teachers as they integrate more technology options for struggling students in their classroom.

Accessible Electronic and Information Technology is technology that can be used by people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. It incorporates the principles of universal design Each user is able to interact with the technology in ways that work best for him or her. Accessible technology is either directly accessible—in other words, it is usable without assistive technology—or it is compatible with standard assistive technology. Just as buildings that have ramps and elevators are accessible to wheelchair users, products that adhere to accessible design principles are usable by people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.
